STICK DANGERS AND YOUR DOGPosted: Monday 22nd February, 2010 HIGHLIGHTING THE DANGERS OF PLAYING 'FETCH' WITH STICKS
We would like to encourage dog owners not to throw sticks for their dogs due to the following;
- Splinters can get stuck in cheeks, gums and between teeth
- they risk being impaled if the stick gets stuck in the ground as they run with it
- the risk of damaging their eyes is extremely high
- bits of the stick snapping off and working their way into the throat/neck tissue
Over the past few months we have treated many dogs with stick injuries, including one, where parts of the stick penetrated through the dogs throat into his neck where a very serious infection set in. This lovely dog went through two lots of surgery, including a CT scan to locate the broken bits of stick and is thankfully now on the mend.
One other dog got impaled through the chest cavity on a stick, after running over the end of it when it got stuck in the ground - she needed immediate life saving surgery. Fortunately she made a full recovery.
These are just two stick unjury cases, but sadly there have been more.
Instead of sticks, we would suggest using large rubber balls or a fabric type of frisbee (not plastic ones).
