GLAD TIDINGS!!Posted: Thursday 17th December, 2009
Its that time of year again to eat, drink (sensibly!) and be merry. We have set out below a list of foods/plants that can be poisonous to our fourlegged companions around this time of year :
Chocolate
The darker the chocolate the more dangerous the poisoning, as dark chocolate has a higher concentration of caffeine/coco. Quantity is also a factor.
Pets that have eaten toxic amounts of chocolate could have vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactiviry, panting, dehydration, increased blood pressure and increased heart rate. If very severe, this can lead on to tremors, twitches, seizures and possiby death.
There is no actual antidote for chocolate poisoning, treatment is symptomatic and therefore depends on the range and severity of the clinical signs. Usually treatment includes intraveous fluids, charcoal orally and medications to help control some of the side effects.
If your dog has eaten chocolate seek veterinary advice as soon as possible.
Antifreeze (ethylene glycol)
Dogs and cats are attracted to Antifreeze due to the sweet taste and smell. Even the smallest amount of ingested antifreeze can cause serious health issues. Most problems occur when people change the antifreeze in their cars and the old liquid runs down the drive.
Pets that ingest antifreeze will show signs of disorientation and will not be able to walk well, this will last for several hours. The animal will then seem as though they have recovered but then lethargy and collapse/coma will occur
If you suspect possible antifreeze poisoning seek veterinary advice immediately.
OTHER POTENTIAL HAZARDS TO LOOK OUT FOR;
-
Raisins, currents - (Christmas cakes, puddings etc)
-
Onions - (onion gravy, stuffing etc), may cause intestinal upset or other problems
-
Ivy/Holly and Poinsettas - minor stomach upsets
-
Fatty foods (turkey skins etc) - pancreatitis
-
Christmas decorations (string, baubles etc) - foreign body/intestinal blockage potential
If in doubt regarding any of the above seek veterinary advice straight away
WE WISH ALL OUR CLIENTS AND PETS A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS
